Testosterone is a word many have heard of, but may not know a lot
about. To some, the word may be an unknown entity that sweaty rugby
players charging around a field probably have plenty of, but nobody
knows why or what specifically it is. To some, testosterone is purely
linked to the display of aggressive behaviour, but it is more complex
than that.
Testosterone is actually the principal male sex hormone derived from
the androgen group and is an essential factor in sexual and reproductive
development, produced primarily in the testes. It helps a number of
important functions such as muscle mass/strength, sex drive, sperm
production, fat distribution, bone density and red blood cell
production.
The development of secondary sex
characteristics at puberty is also aided by testosterone, such as voice
deepening and growth of facial and body hair.
Testosterone is also present in women too, but at substantially lower
amounts than those found in men. In women, testosterone is generated
within the ovaries and adrenal glands, with their levels at an estimated
tenth to a twentieth of man’s levels. As it is a steroid hormone,
testosterone is derived from cholesterol.
Low testosterone
Levels of testosterone are known to decrease over time with age, but
many health experts are in disagreement about what brings on ‘Low T’,
known as hypogonadism, and the topic is often a controversial one. Men
typically receive treatment for hypogonadism if their testosterone
levels are below 300 nanograms per decilitre and they are showing
symptoms of low testosterone.
Many men are terrified that dwindling levels of testosterone will
lead to a huge drop in sexual desire and performance will be impacted.
As men advance in their years, sexual function could be affected by
lowered levels of the hormone, including:
. Infertility.
. Less desire for sex.
. Erectile dysfunction
(ED), or less erections that may occur randomly, such as during sleep.
The link between ED and testosterone is not fully understood, however
low testosterone levels are with the same health conditions that have
been linked to ED, such as type 2 diabetes, obesity and heart disease.
Other low T symptoms may include:
. Losing muscle mass.
. Decreased energy.
. Increased body fat.
. Depression/bad mood.

Gels and Solutions
Testosterone gels and solutions are applied each day, with the
testosterone in the gel being absorbed directly through the skin when
you apply the gel or solution.
Patches
Patches mean testosterone can be absorbed by the skin and are normally
worn on the arm or upper body. They are applied once each day.
Injections and implants
Testosterone injections are typically administered into the upper
buttock, every 1-2 weeks by your doctor. Testosterone may also be
implanted as pellets within soft tissues. The testosterone is slowly
absorbed by your body into the bloodstream.
High testosterone
If a woman’s body produces too much testosterone, she may experience
irregular or absent menstrual periods and excessive body hair
(hirsutism). In addition, frontal balding – similar to male pattern
baldness - is another sign that a woman has high testosterone levels as
well as suffering with acne, increased perspiration, an enlarged
clitoris, increased muscle mass and their voice deepening.
However, the good news is that a combined anti-testosterone (androgen) and oestrogen medicine named Dianette
(Cyproterone Acetate / Ethinylestradiol) can be prescribed for women
with these problems. Not only does it work as an oral contraceptive
pill, Dianette can be prescribed to regulate periods, combat excessive
hair growth on the face and body (hirsutism) in women, help to reduce
acne which hasn’t improved after the long-term use of oral antibiotics
in women and can help women who suffer with female hair loss.

Scientific breakthrough made for hair loss treatments
A new breakthrough by British scientists has raised hope for those
suffering with hair loss, and the therapy may even provide help to
victims of burns.
The results of the tests could pave the way for more hair loss treatments for both men and women, after results demonstrated it was possible to grow new hair follicles from human skin cells – basically the cells that contain the ‘instruction book’ for growing new hair.
Tests are still at an early stage, but the scientists from Durham University in the UK and Columbia University in the U.S. claim that their findings represent a huge breakthrough in treating hair loss that effects millions of men and women around the world, often causing a great deal of distress.
Not only this, but it seems a 40-year wait could be over in the futile efforts to successfully regenerate the crucial structures in the skin that enable hair to grow.
Human hair follicles are incredibly difficult to replicate in a laboratory environment, but the new technique has shown evidence they can be stimulated to grow in skin tissue and also to generate hair shafts.
Currently, expensive hair transplants notoriously used by footballer Wayne Rooney involve the surgeon transplanting hair follicles from the back of the head (where there is plentiful hair) to where it is needed at the front. Therefore, they are simply redistributing already present hair compared to the new technique which could significantly boost the amount of hairs on the head.
Columbia University researcher Dr Angela Christiano, herself a sufferer of alopecia and experiences clumps of hair falling out, said the research “has the potential to transform the medical treatment of hair loss”.
“Our method…has the potential to actually grow new follicles using a patient’s own cells. This could greatly expand the utility of hair-restoration surgery to women and to younger patients – now it is largely restricted to the treatment of male-pattern baldness in patients with stable disease. It could make hair transplantation available to individuals with a limited number of follicles, including those with female-pattern hair loss, scarring alopecia and hair loss due to burns,” she said.
The team of scientists started extracting tiny cells called dermal papillae from strips of human hair cells. These cells are located at the base of a hair and contain the ‘instruction book’ for the successful growth of new hair.
Next, they cloned the cells in a dish, making sure they had several copies of each cell. Similar procedures have been done previously but without any results in getting the cells grow hair after they have been put back into skin.
The Anglo-American team decided to turn the dish of cells upside down, to help them to form into the clumps found in nature. These clumps were transplanted into human skin grafted onto the backs of mice.
It was found that the cells from each of the seven human donors grew hairs and in some cases, the tufts broke through the skin.
Although the hairs were white in colour, Durham researcher Professor Colin Jahoda is optimistic it should be possible to create coloured hair and by using a sample of a person’s own cells, any new hair should be very similar in texture and curliness.
“It’s a key step because it is saying that you can multiply the process. It’s not just about one-for-one replacement. But you need to get hair that is the right colour and texture and this will need further work before human clinical trials can begin,” he said.
The cost to patients is still yet to be determined as clinical trials need to be carried out first. However, it is likely to be cheaper than hair transplants which can range anywhere in price from £6,000 all the way up to £30,000 per patient.

The distress of living with female hair loss
Male hair loss can be an upsetting thing to experience as given the
choice; very few (if any) would choose to lose any hair from their head.
They can no longer style their hair as they used to, as well as feeling
undesirable to the opposite of sex and may receive light-hearted jibes
from friends about their hair loss – which over time can affect
confidence and self-esteem.
However, hair loss is not something experienced solely by men and for many women who suffer with this problem, the stress and emotional aspects involved with this can be much, much worse. A 1992 study featured in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology contrasted psychological impact of hair loss on both sexes and found that women had a more issues about body image and were less able to accept the fact they had lost some hair.
We live in an age where media places far too much focus on what they deem as ‘beauty’ and there is an ever-growing obsession with celebrity culture, with more and more figures in the public eye resorting to whatever expensive treatment possible to retain a youthful appearance.
Hair loss can have a devastating impact on a woman’s confidence and it can be made worse by the fact some GPs are still failing to recognise female hair loss as a genuine medical problem, ignoring the huge distress endured by the majority of those who are affected, “because you are never going to die from it”, says Iain Sallis, a consultant Trichologist at a top hair clinic.
Elaine Nixon is just one of an estimated 8 million women in the UK alone who have some degree of hair loss. Elaine had such an impressive head of hair during her teenage years that she fashioned different styles for a hairdresser’s. However, when Elaine began to lose her locks by the time she was just 24 years of age, this prompted one particularly unforgettable and hurtful comment from a stranger at a bar who said: “You’re going a bit bald there aren’t you, love?”
“After that I just stopped going out” says Elaine, now 39. “You notice people looking at your hairline, not just in your eyes. It makes you so self-conscious. My confidence was stripped. I saw my GP at the time, but he was useless. I also went to see a cosmetic surgeon. But when I rang back after the initial appointment, the receptionist said ‘Oh yes, the consultant’s said there’s nothing we can do’. I was distraught. My real fear was I’d end up with a wig.”
Elaine’s hair loss was eventually pinpointed to a male hormone treatment she had been prescribed for a congenital deformity of her fallopian tubes, however there are a number of different causes for hair loss, and understanding the varying types of hair loss is important. Elaine sought help from a hair transplant expert for her hair loss, but for the majority of people this option is simple not viable. Operations cost thousands of pounds at a time, and more than one is usually required.
The main types of hair loss are:
. Telogen effluvium: General shedding/thinning of the hair that is normally only a temporary occurrence. It can develop rapidly, usually about 1 to 3 months following major ‘shock’ placed on the body such as stress, childbirth, sudden weight loss, illness, operation, or reaction to a medication. Regular hair growth and thickness is seen after a few months however persistent shedding may be caused by an iron deficiency or underactive thyroid gland.

It is believed that DHT initiates a process by which hair follicles begin to deteriorate over time and eventually stop producing hair entirely. Women usually experience a thinning of hair from the top of the head and it can get more noticeable after the menopause.
. Alopecia areata: Thought to be an autoimmune disease, it primarily affects teenagers and young adults resulting in round, patchy hair loss areas that may merge into one over time. The hair follicles are not permanently damaged, and in most instances the person will see hair growing back after several months. In a few cases, hair loss may be permanent but treatments to stimulate hair growth sometimes work.

Lumigan eye drops could be used to combat hair loss
In the UK there are millions of men and women who are affected by
hair loss. Although Male-pattern baldness is more common than
female-pattern baldness, (affecting around half of all men at some point
in their life), it can be a deeply stressing condition for both sexes
and can often severely damage confidence and even impact on one’s social
life.
However, there are numerous treatment options available to these millions of people in the form of Propecia and Regaine for males, and Dianette, Florisene and Regaine for females. Today though, there is more hope for men and women around the UK who are losing their hair, after new research found that a side effect of the active ingredient in the eye drops ‘Lumigan’ may be utilised to create hair growth on the scalp.
Lumigan contains an active ingredient called ‘bimatoprost’, a type of medicine that is known as a prostaglandin analogue. Lumigan is usually prescribed for patients with ocular hypertension or open-angle glaucoma where there is increased pressure inside the eye. The bimatoprost works by decreasing the pressure inside the eye by increasing the drainage of fluid from the eye into the blood stream. If the pressure is not reduced then there is a great risk of damage to the optic nerve and then impaired vision.
One peculiar side effect though of the eye drops is the fact it can stimulate the growth of eyelashes, and now preliminary trials have already begun to see if bimatoprost can reverse the onset of male and female pattern baldness.
Lead scientist Professor Valerie Randall, from the University of Bradford, is a consultant to Allergan Inc which manufactures Lumigan. She says: “Bimatoprost is known to stimulate eyelash growth and is already used clinically for this purpose. We wanted to see whether it would have the same effect on scalp hair, as the two types of follicle are very different. Our findings show that bimatoprost does stimulate growth in human scalp hair follicles and therefore could offer a new approach for treating hair loss disorders.”

Prof Randall continued: “Even if the androgen receptor is telling the hair follicle to do negative things, the drug is telling it to do positive things.”
Bimatoprost has been applied to the living scalp tissue provided from donors undergoing cosmetic surgery. In merely a nine-day period, it was found that follicles that had been treated with bimatoprost grew a third more hair than untreated samples.
In addition, researchers discovered that follicles in a person’s scalp contain the same kind of receptors that respond to bimatoprost that are also in eyelash follicles. Prof Randall explained what this could mean for those who are losing their hair, saying: “This means that so long as the drug can be applied in such a way that it can reach the follicle, it should stimulate hair growth in patients.”
All that awaits now is the result of six-month long Phase II clinical trials, which are currently underway in the U.S. and Germany. The trials comprise of 220 men with male-pattern baldness and 172 women with female pattern baldness. Comparisons will now be analysed, with some patients being administered a solution of bimatoprost on the scalp, some patients will be given an ineffective placebo, whereas others will be using the highly effective Minoxidil, the active ingredient contained in Regaine Foam and Regaine Lotion.

New genetic baldness treatment offers hope
Scientists at the University of Pennsylvania lead by Dr George Costarelis believe they may have found the reason why we go bald. Dr Costarelis and his dermatological team have discovered the enzyme Prostaglandin D2 (PGD2) that is responsible for preventing hair follicles from maturing. The link between genetics and baldness has long been common knowledge but the cause has not.
When the team analysed the scalps of balding men, they found levels of PDG2 to be three times higher in areas in which the hair was thinning. The research suggests that PGD2 prevents the follicle cells from maturing, so blocking PGD2 would allow the hair to grow again. Dr Costarelis found that bald men have cells capable of making hair, which adds weight to the argument that PGD2 is responsible for stopping otherwise healthy, capable cells of producing hair.
Back in March 2012 the journal Science Translational Medicine reported that in tests on mice the compound PGD2 stunted hair growth. Drugs that block this protein are already on the market as they are used to treat asthma and allergies, and that is good news according to Dr Costarelis: “The nice thing about dermatology and hair loss in general is that you can take compounds that maybe are being used as a pill, and put them into a topical formulation.”
Dr Costarelis went on to add: “We certainly think it would be good at preventing hair loss but we don’t know for sure that it would regrow”. Dr Costarelis has also announced this week that he is in talks with several pharmaceutical companies about developing a treatment that he says: “could be available in two years”.
Lab tests suggest the treatment may also help women who are losing their hair. Female hair loss carries an even greater stigma than the male condition, but is not as uncommon as many people believe. About 40 per cent of women suffer from some form of hair loss as a result of hormone changes during menopause.
For men this number is significantly higher, by the age of 50 nearly half of all men have some degree of male pattern baldness, a number which rockets to 70 per cent by the age of 70. It also seems that being famous or even royal doesn’t protect you from baldness. As we reported back in July 2012 Wayne Rooney and Louis Walsh have both undergone hair transplant procedures and in the news today Doctor Asim Shahmalak has predicted Prince William will be bald by the time he is 40.
While celebrities have undergone hair transplant procedures, these remain out of reach for most people due to their high price. As Team Great Britain’s ‘super Saturday’ came to a close on Saturday

The 23-year-old from Cheam near Sutton, was diagnosed with alopecia at the age of 10 after first losing one of her eyebrows. Months later saw chunks of her hair begin to fall out and then shortly after this Joanna lost her eyelashes. Despite the best attempts of doctors to treat her, she was given the news that her condition was not curable.
The specific cause of alopecia is still open to debate, although many experts are in agreement that it is a disease of the immune system, whereby the immune system attacks the hair follicles. Others agree that the hair loss can also be attributed to stress, and Gail Porter is one celebrity who is suspected to suffer from stress-induced alopecia areata, following the collapse of her marriage to Toploader guitarist Dan Hipgrave in 2005.
Yesterday morning, Joanna spoke to the television show Daybreak regarding her Olympic experiences, and said, “I’ve always had the opinion that you only live once, I’m not going to let having alopecia hold me back. It has been great being a cyclist; it has given me so much more confidence in myself. Being an Olympic medal winner can’t help but give you even more confidence and I think if I can help raise awareness too that will help. I was over the moon to win. The crowd were going crazy and I was just trying to soak up the atmosphere. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity: home games, a gold medal and a world record. I’ve been so excited ever since it was announced that it was going to be in London. The crowd and their support definitely helped spur us on.”

Male hair loss DNA test can open the way for early preventive action
After renowned hair transplant surgeon Dr Bessam Farjo made headlines last month
by performing what is believed to be the world’s first streaming of a
hair transplant, he is now in the news again. Dr Farjo, who has clinics
in Manchester and London, and boasts ex Manchester United footballer
Clayton Blackmore as one of many celebrity clients, is offering the
chance for men to take a simple test to see if they are likely to lose
their hair.The pioneering new idea that is carried out at Dr Farjo’s clinics is a £195 DNA test which involves taking a sample of saliva from inside the cheek. The sample then gets sent to a specialised laboratory in the U.S. where it is analysed for the presence of a gene that results in follicles to stop growing, thus resulting in hair loss. After just ten days, men can find out whether they are at risk of losing their hair.
Dr Farjo commented on the procedure and who could benefit, saying, “This test is useful for someone very young who has not yet started losing their hair but wants to have peace of mind or to do something about it if there’s a family history. A positive result means you have a 70 per cent chance of being significantly bald by the age of 40. That means you’d look in the mirror and say, “I’m bald”, not just thinning a little bit.”

L’Oreal experts develop new treatment for hair loss
Trichologists from Paris have discovered information that could
possible pave the way for new methods of treating baldness. Head of hair
biology Dr Bruno Bernard and his team at L’Oreal Paris underwent
research and found that some hair follicles can become trapped in their
resting or ‘sleeping’ state, which then means new hair is not grown and
eventually will fall out. Usually hair strands grow for about four years
before the follicles become dormant and the strand will fall out. As
the follicles remain dormant, stem cells in the skin should begin to
kick-start the procedure of growing new hair. However, this process is
interrupted and fails to occur for people who are suffering from
baldness.
The researchers however may not be able to completely halt the balding process forever; the hair follicles inevitably lose the ability to make new hair. For people who are looking a little thin on top, the future products the team are developing could come in handy and prevent you from having to do a dreaded ‘comb over’, using embarrassing wigs, or hugely expensive hair transplants. Couples who share a bed may reap health benefits
In recent times it has not been uncommon for many couples to insist
on sleeping apart and in separate rooms. Issues such as snoring,
sweating, wind and even fighting over the sheets can lead to one half of
a couple deciding enough is enough and sleeping in the spare room.
However, if you are in a relationship with one of these problems and are
considering leaving your partner to sleep alone, stop! According to
experts in America, there could be major health benefits sharing a bed
with your long-term partner.
Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh claim that sleeping with somebody by your side, can decrease the stress hormone cortisol. They believe this could be related to feelings of safety and security elevated due to someone being next to you. A high cortisol level is often attributed to prolonged stress. Occasional increase in the level of cortisol may not be too dangerous. However, a prolonged case of high cortisol release can then result in too much ‘cytokines’ being emitted. These are proteins can cause inflammation that can bring on heart disease, depression, and have detrimental effects on the immune functions, fertility, and eventually, lead to the condition known as Cushing’s syndrome.
Lead researcher Wendy Troxel spoke about how a couple sleeping together may help to decrease these damaging proteins, “Sleep is a critically important health behaviour that we know is associated with heart disease and psychiatric wellbeing. There is extensive literature showing that married people — happily married people, in particular — live longer, happier, and healthier lives than their unmarried or unhappily married counterparts. We also know sleep is critically important for health and wellbeing, and it happens to be a behaviour couples engage in together, so it stands to reason it may be an important link with their health.”
However, there are even more reasons for partners to continue to share a bed. Some experts say that this will increase levels of the ‘love hormone’ oxytocin and many people have previously assumed that this is only released during sex. Dr David Hamilton is a scientist who has released a book titled ‘Why Kindness Is Good For You’, and he has studied in great depth that the role oxytocin plays in the body. He says, “Sleeping together will increase oxytocin levels, providing you are happy in the relationship. Making love is one of the most reliable ways to produce oxytocin, as is going to sleep embracing someone or just being physically happy in their company or with the conversation you are having in bed. And oxytocin has a super-spiral effect; the more physical contact you have, the more oxytocin you’ll produce, which causes you to want more contact, and so on. Oxytocin can have an addictive effect.”
Dr Hamilton also says that low levels of the love hormone oxytocin have been shown to be existent within patients suffering from irritable bowel syndrome. He comments, “Oxytocin has also been shown to reduce inflammation. While inflammation is a necessary part of the healing process, too much of it, which can accompany bacterial infections or chronic stress, is damaging to the body. It’s well known, for example, that inflammation plays a role in many types of cancer. Meanwhile, a number of recent studies have shown how oxytocin can affect the heart.”

US teenager with acne problems has become a massive hit on YouTube
A 19 year old girl with severe acne from California, US, has become a
huge YouTube sensation after she uploaded a video of herself discussing
her ordeal and then showed viewers how to expertly cover up the spots
with the aid of make-up. Cassandra Bankson, who is clearly quite
intelligent and far beyond her years, initially talks to viewers with
her face apparently picture perfect and flawless. It is only when she
begins to wipe away all the foundation and other bits of make-up that
her acne problems are revealed.She then gives viewers close-ups of the brightly red coloured blemished skin on her face, which she then shows is evident on her shoulders, neck and back areas. After the video received an incredible 7.6 million hits around the globe, Cassandra was invited onto the American breakfast television show, ‘Good Morning America’, to discuss the history of her problems and how she deals with them. She painfully discussed the bullying she received at school and how she meticulously tried various methods of covering her acne with different make-up and techniques. She explained how she has found modelling work after her portfolio snaps showed her with perfect skin, thanks to her talents at spot-concealing.
Cassandra commented on her acne struggles, saying, “I filmed the video last November but it took me a month to post it, I thought I was going to get the same hate I got at school over my skin. But I thought if it could help one person, one girl or guy with the same condition, it would be worth it.” She was surprised by the massive positive response to the initial video, with people all around the world posting comments thanking her for her tips and requesting her to share anymore useful bits of advice. When speaking on Good Morning America, she said, “It was a real eye opener. It (acne) is such an epidemic for adults as well as teens."

Future problems for childhood cancer survivors
If you develop cancer during your childhood and survive it, you are more likely to suffer from hair loss
and/or disfigurement during your adult years, resulting in possible
long-term emotional problems. This is the claims of a new American study
published last week in the ‘Journal of Clinical Oncology’.
Karen Kinahan, coordinator of the ‘STAR Survivorship Program at the Robert H. Lurie Cancer Center of Northwestern University in Chicago’ and her team studied data from 14,358 childhood cancer survivors and compared this information against 4,023 of their siblings who were already involved in a separate scientific study. All 14,358 were survivors who had received their treatment between the years 1970 and 1986 and were given two questionnaires, one in 1992 and another one in 2003.
When compared, it was noted than those who had survived cancer during childhood actually had notably more scarring and disfigurement on their legs, arms and head areas during later years in their life and that adults with these attributes, usually will suffer from more depression and lead a worse quality of life.
Kinahan commented on the results, “I think it showed us these aren’t necessarily life-threatening late effects of cancer, but certainly we need to be more aware of the outcomes these patients are dealing with”. The study explained that survivors with persistent hair loss had more of a chance of having anxiety, female survivors with persistent hair loss were more likely to display signs of a depressive nature, and survivors who had been left with disfigurements on their body had an increased chance of depression.
Indeed if we further look at the statistics, 14% of survivors had reported that they were going bald, compared to 6% of their siblings. Hair loss was especially associated with depression in the female survivors. In addition, those who reported scars or disfigurements had a 20% higher chance of having depression in comparison to those without such issues. It was shown that overall, ¼ of survivors had a scar or disfigurement later in life, whilst it was just one in twelve for their siblings. Quality of life was shown to be effected in negative ways for those who had survived cancer in such circumstances as mental health, general pain, physical ability and their social interaction skills.

Indeed if we further look at the statistics, 14% of survivors had reported that they were going bald, compared to 6% of their siblings. Hair loss was especially associated with depression in the female survivors. In addition, those who reported scars or disfigurements had a 20% higher chance of having depression in comparison to those without such issues. It was shown that overall, ¼ of survivors had a scar or disfigurement later in life, whilst it was just one in twelve for their siblings. Quality of life was shown to be effected in negative ways for those who had survived cancer in such circumstances as mental health, general pain, physical ability and their social interaction skills.
