Menarini, a private company headquartered in Florence, are manufacturers of Spedra and are touting the new treatment as the very first ‘second-generation’ medication for ED. This is due to the fact patients within the clinical trials did not report back to have experienced some of the side effects associated with the other PDE-5 inhibitors, i.e. blurred vision or slight hearing loss.

Spedra has been shown to have an impressive success rate of 77% and is rapidly becoming well known for being the quickest acting male impotence treatment there is. Those being prescribed it for the first time may find they start on 100mg, but there are also 50mg and 200mg doses of the drug. The maximum recommended dosing frequency is once per day. New erectile dysfunction drug in the pipeline

Apricus Biosciences Inc. has entered into an exclusive license agreement with Takeda Pharmaceuticals International, to market Vitaros, a treatment for erectile dysfunction in the UK. The marketing authorization application for Vitaros, was accepted by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) for review in June 2011 and the license is anticipated in 2013.

European health regulators approved a marketing application for Vitaros last year. According to market researcher IMS Health, the erectile dysfunction (ED) market in the U.K. was valued at 202 million euros in 2011.

“We look forward to expanding the reach of our Vitaros product for erectile dysfunction in the U.K., the second largest ED market inEurope”, Apricus’ chief executive Bassam Damaj said in a statement.

Apricus say that, “Vitaros is a topically delivered formulation of alprostadil delivered with Dodecyl 2-N, N-(dimethylamino)-propionate hydrochloride (DDAIP HCl), Apricus’ proprietary NexACT delivery technology, for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.

When absorbed through the skin, alprostadil, a vasodilator, directly boosts blood flow, thereby causing an erection. The NexACT technology is designed to enhance the delivery of an active drug, to improve therapeutic outcomes and cut down systemic side effects, associated with oral and injectable medications.

Vitaros has received marketing authorization in Canada and is being marketed by Abbott Laboratories Ltd. In theUSA, commercial rights to Vitaros have been licensed to Warner Chilcott. Agreements have also been signed with Sandoz-Novartis in Germany, Bracco inItaly, Elis Pharmaceuticals in certain Middle East, and Neopharm inIsraelfor marketing the erectile dysfunction therapy.

This application for Vitaros to the EMA comes hot on the heels of Stendra (avanafil), which received approval inAmericafrom the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Stendra is the latest in line to try and steal Viagra’s crown as the best selling erectile dysfunction drug, however whilst Stendra has been approved in America, it has yet to receive approval in the UK and Europe.

New erectile dysfunction medication awaiting FDA approval

Vivus Inc. have announced that they have submitted a “New Drug Application” (NDA) to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), for a new medication to be entered into the lucrative $4 billion erectile dysfunction market.  The new drug, named “Avanafil”, may take several months for its FDA approval to be confirmed and will be thrust into an increasingly competitive market that already includes Viagra, Cialis, and the newly introduced Levitra Orodispersible tablets.

Clinical trials with Avanafil have taken place involving over 1,350 subjects, with 50mg, 100mg, and 200mg dosage strengths being analysed. The NDA submitted by Vivus is backed up by including data from Phase 3 trials and these trials were said to have proved the drug’s safety and efficacy. Results showed that patients who had taken the 200mg dose, had achieved an erection sufficient for penetration in 77% and 63% of the trials, in comparison to just 54% and 42% in patients dosed placebo. In addition, many patients were able to have successful intercourse in a mere 15 minutes of taking Avanafil.

With the patent for Viagra due to expire in 2012, the market for impotence medication will become very interesting in the following year and we may yet see many more new and exciting products being introduced.

A Pharmaceutical company called Vivus is hoping to launch an erectile dysfunction drug called avanafil. Vivus issued a press release stating that there new drug Avanafil will be much faster than Viagra Cialis & Levitra.
Mr Leland Wilson, chief executive officer of VIVUS stated "Erectile dysfunction is a significant problem among more than half of all men over the age of 40. While sales of currently available ED therapies exceed $3.8 billion a year, persistent switching by patients suggests that patients are less than satisfied with current therapies," "These phase 3 avanafil data not only confirm the robust efficacy we've seen in earlier trials, but potentially differentiate avanafil from other PDE5 inhibitors when it comes to side effects and time-to-onset of efficacy. We are confident that avanafil can effectively compete in the oral ED therapy market."
Mr Charles Bowden, M.D., Senior Director, Clinical Development at VIVUS stated "From our discussions with patients and physicians, we knew that rapid onset was an important attribute in the selection of an ED therapy. A recent study in 1,900 patients with ED showed that 75% of patients identified rapid effect as an important treatment expectation. Knowing that avanafil can be effective within 15 minutes should create an attractive position in the PDE5 market,"
Existing erectile dysfunction medication tends to work after 30 minutes and therefore this would make Avanafil’s shorter effective medication of 15 minutes quite popular.
