We all know erectile dysfunction drug Viagra
has been helping men get ‘stiff’ in the bedroom for almost 20 years
now, but could it prove to be a potent remedy in the fight against stiff
backs?
This could indeed be the case after Turkish researchers looked into
the potential of Viagra – also known as ‘the little blue pill’ – being
utilised as a treatment for sciatica.
Tests involving rats seemed to demonstrate that the wonder male
impotence drug manages to alleviate the painful symptoms associated with
sciatica, a painful condition which affects a million UK men and
400,000 women.
Researchers involved in the tests made the discovery that a daily
dose of the erectile dysfunction treatment can quicken recovery. Taking
Viagra for a month also managed to heal damaged nerves and helped
increase movement.
Exercise, acupuncture, and an anti-inflammatory painkiller such as naproxen or diclofenac
are the usually the first port of call for treating sciatica, but in
more serious scenarios – such as if the pain has lasted more than 6
weeks, the patient could need surgery to stop the pain from reoccurring.
However, scientists based in Malatya, eastern Turkey, found
anti-impotence medication Viagra to be successful at offering pain
relief during tests on 30 rats.
The scientists administered a daily dose of Viagra to some of the
rats they tested, and others were given a smaller amount every other
day, whilst some rats received none of the drug at all.
Remarkably, the rats given the daily dose of Viagra actually ended up
being able to enjoy more movement in comparison to those in the other
groups.
Scans were conducted on the rats, finding they had higher levels of
nerve regeneration, meaning that Viagra had accelerated the body’s
healing mechanisms.
The drug would appear to work by boosting the blood supply to damaged
areas. Scientists commented in a report: “We believe a daily dose of
Viagra plays an important role in treatment of sciatic nerve damage.”
Sciatica is the term used for when pain caused by irritation or
compression of the sciatic nerve. If the sciatic nerve becomes
compressed or irritated, it usually results in pain, numbness and a
tingling sensation emanating from the lower back and travelling down one
of your legs to your foot and toes.
Many pregnant women incorrectly believe they have sciatica – in fact they are more likely to be suffering with pelvic girdle pain (PGP), which is much more common and has some of the same symptoms as sciatica.
While people with sciatica may suffer with general back pain, the pain caused by the condition is primarily located in the buttocks and legs much more than the back.
Depending on how the condition is defined, an estimated 2% to 40% of
people will suffer with sciatica at some point in their life. It is more
predominant in people aged in their 40s and 50s, and perhaps
surprisingly to some, it is actually men who are often more affected
than women.

The National Pharmacy Association (NPA) has published numerous videos, such as one that discusses the services patients can expect from their local pharmacy, in addition to information about pharmacy services which are useful for men, as previous AYP weeks have aimed to boost awareness for men’s health.
For AYP 2015, the primary aims will be to raise public awareness about the services provided at local pharmacies in the framework of the theme “Ask Your Pharmacist about Medicines and More”, such as hammering home the message that a pharmacy isn’t merely just a place to go to collect prescribed medication.
The pharmacy can be so much more! For example, some might be unaware that pharmacies can even provide services to help people stop smoking, maintain a healthy weight, manage alcohol consumption and offer screening and health checks, such as sexually transmitted infection and blood pressure testing. The great news is that patients can pop in without the need for an appointment and many of these services are completely free.
Also, with winter fast approaching, it is also worth remembering that many local pharmacies provide flu jabs – free of charge on the NHS for those in the ‘at risk’ groups. There are an estimated 13,000 community pharmacies within the UK and 96% of people can access a pharmacy in 20 minutes, either by foot or via public transport.
One of the aims of AYP week is that patients understand that pharmacists are not just there for handing out prescriptions and painkillers. This is crucial now more than ever with the government cutting funding for many GP surgeries, meaning it is increasingly difficult to get a doctor’s appointment, and pharmacists are becoming more important.
Approximately 50 million GP visits each year are for non-life threatening problems such as coughs and colds, mild eczema and athlete’s foot. However, if people popped into their local pharmacy instead, they could save both themselves and their GP time and trouble. Instead of attempting to book, and then waiting, for a GP appointment, why not go to see your local pharmacist at any time.

Painkillers linked to reduced skin cancer risk
New research suggests that regularly taking common painkillers such
as aspirin and ibuprofen could help to reduce the risk of developing a
form of skin cancer.
An Australian analysis into nine past studies found that non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) were effective in decreasing the risk of squamous cell carcinoma by 18%. This kind of cancer is the second most common type of skin cancer in the UK, with the major risk coming from sun exposure and excessive use of tanning beds.
NSAIDs include over-the-counter painkillers like aspirin and ibuprofen, as well as prescription medication that Medical Specialists® Pharmacy provide for suitable patients – celecoxib, diclofenac and naproxen.
Previous studies into the drugs have uncovered evidence to show they can be useful in also decreasing the risk of developing other cancers, such as colon cancer.
Health experts have previously suggest that NSAIDs could be beneficial in helping to boost protection against skin cancer, but definitive evidence for the theory has been scarce.
Therefore, researchers involved in the new analysis of nine previous studies assessed usage of NSAIDs against the risk of squamous cell carcinoma.
Reporting their findings in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, the researchers explained that taking any NSAID was associated with an 18% lesser risk of developing the cancer, and taking NSAIDs other than aspirin could lead to a 15% decreased risk.
These painkillers “have potential as part of a skin cancer-prevention strategy,” said review co-author Catherine Olsen, a senior research officer with QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.
However, there is still an uncertainty regarding NSAIDs and skin cancer. For example, different people have varying degrees of sun exposure, will be taking different doses of their particular drug, resulting in accuracy of findings being debatable.
Some are of the belief that NSAIDs such as diclofenac could help to prevent skin cancer due to the fact they inhibit an enzyme named COX-2, linked to tumour development. A higher reduced risk was found with people taking NSAIDs that had either pre-cancerous growths or a history of skin cancer, which means the drugs could be considered as a preventative option for certain people in the future.
Olsen and others aren’t quite ready to advise people to start popping NSAIDs though just yet to avert the onset of skin cancer, citing that the drugs have been linked to some risks of their own.
“Don’t rely on aspirin or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to protect your skin,” commented Dr. Joshua Zeichner, director of cosmetic and clinical research at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, who wasn’t involved in the study.
“The best treatment is primary prevention,” he said, advising people to use sunscreen, sun-protective clothing and taking advantage of shade.
