Smoking not cool - most children think

According to a Government research, nine out of 10 children hate cigarettes and want their parents who smoke to quit. A poll of 1,000 children aged between eight and 13 found of those with a parent who smokes, 96 per cent wanted them to stop and almost two thirds would give up the chance of extra pocket money if they would.

The research coincides with the launch of a new Department of Health campaign aimed at getting loved ones to stop smoking. It features real children, not actors, talking about how concerned they are about their parents’ smoking.

Professor Terence Stephenson, President, Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) said: “This research is extremely significant and we need to look at the health outcomes and effects when adults smoke in the presence of their children.

"It is encouraging to hear that those children who were consulted knew the health risks related to smoking and the harmful effects of people smoking around them.

  5. It is nice to know that children thinks like that, if parents can keep an eye what they doing and what they are thinking about smoking after age 13, then the numbers of smoking teenagers might fall. Thanks for this post.

  6. I grew up with my mother and her parents all wishing they'd never started smoking and I've never, ever been tempted. My grandfather had emphysema - pretty unpleasant to watch; my mother now has asthma and the doctors have warned her that if she carries on smoking it will kill her.

I hope the message gets out there: something that leads to a long, slow illness is not cool. It's self-abusive.

  7. I am always amazed that some kids still smoke. Keeping up the positive messages for children of all ages is important.

  8. Glad to have read this, it's good that health education starts early, enabling kids to choose a healthier lifestyle.

  9. You would be amazed at how much kids think about and care about their parents smoking. Who would want to know that their parents will probably die prematurely because of addictive habits? I know lots of people smoke to stay thin, but losing weight isn't worth losing your health, too.

  12. My wife smokes and is constantly hiding around the back of the house trying to conceal it from them. I dont smoke at all and I know for a fact that my 4 and 6 year old arent impressed by it as they have found butts on the ground and asked me what they were.

  18. It's great to hear that children don't find smoking "cool". Smoking can have such greater financial effects than people realize. higher cost's for life insurance, medical related costs and overall negative implications!

  22. This sounds like a good campaign. Children are deeply effected by smoking but also are keen to appear cool ... so if it can be seen as uncool thats a good thing!
